Thessis: Museological programming and design for the Museum of Natural History of Siatista

Abstract

This master thesis is the proposal for the museological programming and design for the Museum of Natural History of Siatista at the building of Trabantzeio Gymnasium. It is the first part of a common proposal for the museological planning, whereas the other part is the master thesis of the architect Iraklis Kalogeropoulos.

The current proposal is based on the study and research over two collections: a) the Paleontological Collection of the Municipality of Voios (which previously belonged to the Trabantzeio Gymnasium) and b) the Botanical Collection of the Mountaineering Club of Siatista called “Bourinos”. These two collections, which are the subject of scientific research, cover a wide range of matters relating with the natural environment and the area of Siatista.

The understanding of the cultural environment was considered primarily necessary for the study and understanding of the natural environment. As a consequence, a crucial matter was the study of the relationship between collections and society on the one hand and, on the other, the study of the relationship between the collections and the building.

Finally, another crucial issue was the local character of the museum and how this locality could be the occasion, in order for the museum, to be able to address to a larger group of people. Concluding, this approach is about scientific collections, about a building inscribed in the collective memory and about a local museum, which searches out its connection with the community and its environment but also seeks wider exposure, surpassing its local character.
