Thesis title: Μonuments of Thessaloniki and religious diversity: Proposal for Educational activities for the sixth (6th) grade in Primary Education

Interculturalism and pluralism have been characteristics of the past and present societies alike. The political management of multiculturalism in publicand museum education and the official reason of archeology support an ethnocentric dimension in the management of diversity in society through the ages. In each case an intercultural approach of the past and present is welcomed so that intercultural dialogue may be cultivated. At the same time an inter-religious dialogue in the above fields is a challenge. Dynamics and potential of monuments as alternative learning environments in early intercultural education lies in their public domain and their providing access to the multipart interpretive approaches to the social, intercultural and ideological formation of the past. However, the design and organization of educational actions on the dynamics of direct visibility, accessibility and materiality of space is inextricably linked to the ideological use of the past and requires certain methodological and epistemological conditions concerning the educational context with emphasis on critical reading of the past on the basis of collaborative and experiential teaching methods. This paper proposes a set of educational actions within the principles of  interculturalism in the field of public and museum education in three selected monuments of Thessaloniki: the church of Panagia ton Chalkeon, the Synagogue of Monastir and the Old Archaeological Museum-Yeni mosque based on aspects of the city story and religious diversity raising the issue of management of the monuments in the fields of public and museum education.
