Thesis title: Stories from the edge of the city: a proposal for a guided walk to Thessaloniki’s erotic margins in the 20th and 21st century

The aim of this thesis is to present the significance of the thematic cultural routes as an important mean for promoting cultural heritage. In recent years we are witnessing an increasing interest for heritage management; and especially the ways in which the relics of the past could be used for the development and enhancement of cultural heritage. One of the most common ways to achieve this is through cultural thematic routes, which nowadays tend to become a widespread practice all over the world. Therefore, a case study of a cultural thematic route for the city of Thessaloniki was devised and implemented. The goal is to reveal a hidden sight of the city, that of an “erotic metropolis”, unraveling its “sinner” past through a sensational pathway of the most marginal places. This cultural route tries to shed light, perhaps to the most unknown side of the city and also to spark a fruitful dialogue between the scientific community, local authorities and the travel agencies as to further develop of the city of Thessaloniki, particularly in the touristic area.
