Thesis title: Streets of Absence: Jews of Thessaloniki then and now; four artistisc environments for public space

The essay refers to the presence of public art, the relationship of the monuments with the process of memory, as well as the need of people to maintain the historical truth, whether they succeed or not. It presents the background on the history of the Jews of Thessaloniki and describes the cultural route “Streets of absence: Thessaloniki Jews then and now”. It then introduces the proposal of four artistic interventions, all three of which focus on specific tragic events that unfolded in the occupied city of Thessaloniki with leading characters Greek Jew citizens. The fourth concerns the important part of the education of Jews, such as the School Alliance. Interventions are placed in specific stations of the route to reinforce the experience of the visitors and to enhance the information through modern art, thus cultivating the aesthetic perception of visitors and all the city’s inhabitants. The data is presented embedded in the frame of reference of the route, and each artistic intervention is analyzed through the central artistic idea, the target and the intended audience, and so as the construction layout.
