The educational character of the museums has defined the development of a communication policy mainly aiming at the approach and attraction of the public in a large scale. An open, democratic and contemporary educational policy is mainly served by the exhibition planning and the educational activities and programs both inside and outside the museum. The museum kit which forms the nucleus of the present thesis is a valuable tool for the communication policy of the museum. The main element of a museum kit is the hands-on collection with the aim of bringing the world of museums closer to the public. The present diploma thesis is dealing with the planning of a museum kit for the Historical Museum of Alexandroupolis laying special emphasis on the front-end evaluation. The title of the museum kit is “A town introduces itself…” and the main goal of this educational tool is the connecting link between the museum and the school. The subject refers to the local history and especially to the foundation of Alexandroupolis and its socio-economic flourishing, from 1870 until the annexation of the town to the Greek State, 1920. In order to achieve a deeper understanding of the value of the museum kit, the thesis approaches theoretical issues and scientific questions which relate to the creation, the function and the development of this teaching recourse. This way the appropriate frame is formed as to approach the planning of the museum kit for the Historical Museum of Alexandroupolis.
