Matoula Scaltsa is Professor Emeritus and Appointed Academic Coordinator  of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Together with Panos Tzonos, architect – Professor Emeritus (A.U.Th.), they co-founded in 2001 the first Masters Course in Museology and Cultural Management in Greece.

Scaltsa read history and archaeology at the University of Athens, pursued postgraduate studies in Museology at the City University London and obtained her PhD from the School of Architecture of the A.U.Th., where she taught Museology and History of Art.

In the last 30 years, from 1985 onwards, she has curated more than 50 exhibitions of works of art, historical records and archaeological objects in museums of Thessaloniki, Athens and Patras, collaborating with the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, the Benaki Museum, the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank of Greece, the Sports Museum etc. Tutoring the final studies of the postgraduate students of museology she is working on applied research projects concerning permanent exhibitions and/or new museums. She is also leading Research Programmes funded by the European Union on museological issues. Parallel to the exhibitions, she supervised the conception and structure of museum education programmes for children. She is also Supervisor of Museum Education Programmes of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art. She has been a Member of the Governing Body of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art since 1985, as well as a Member of its Visual Arts Committee, has served as a member of the Visual Arts Committee of the National Bank of Greece, and a Member of the Advisory Committee on Museum Policy of the Greek Ministry of Culture. In 1995 she was in charge of Visual Arts Events and Cultural Events Programming Coordination of the Cultural Capital of Europe Foundation “Thessaloniki ’97”.

In 1997 Prof. Scaltsa conceived and realized the curriculum of the Postgraduate Programme “Management of Cultural Organisations” for the Greek Open University, which has been operating since 2004 and, as an Academic Supervisor, she was responsible for its relevant textbooks.

She has worked extensively on Greek art, documenting and presenting to the public several art collections of Cultural Institutions which published her research in their catalogues and books. Among them are mentioned Art Galleries in Greece, Athens-Thessaloniki 1920-1988 (1989), The Greek Painter Gounaropoulos (1990), The Collection of the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank of Greece (1990), Arts Sponsorship: Museums, Galleries, Arts Organizations in the U.K. and Greece (1993), which has been translated to Greek, On Museology and Culture (1999). She is the editor of Conferences’ Proceedings like Museology in the 21st Century: Theory and Practice (2001) and responsible for the series of publications of the annual conferences and symposia of the IPP “Museology” under the title Museums 04 (2007), Museums 05 (2008), Museums 06 (2012), Museums 11: The New Acropolis Museum: Ideology, Museology, Architecture (2013) etc. She has published a lot of articles on cultural issues in edited volumes and art magazines in Greece and abroad, while since 1990 she has been commenting on museums, exhibitions and the arts for the daily Greek newspapers Ta Nea and To Vima, the radio and television.

Prof. Scaltsa has conducted numerous museological projects, including the permanent collection and exhibition of the Folk Museum of Velvendo, Kozani, Northern Greece, the Museum of the Holy Metropolis of Alexandroupolis, Thrace, the Museum of the Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia (reviewed in the British Museum Practice, Winter 2007), the Gerovassiliou Wine Museum, Thessaloniki. Among her projects are included the museological study for the Museum of the Holy Monastery of Kykkos in Cyprus, the conversion of the old textile factory of YFANET in Thessaloniki to a Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of History of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Noesis Centre for the Promotion of Sciences and Technology in Thessaloniki, the Museum of the Municipal Library of Kozani, Western Macedonia, The Xanthi Tobacco Museum, Thrace, The Museum of the National Bank of Greece, Athens, The Sikelianos Museum, Lefkas etc. She has also conducted museological projects for the exhibitions of the Permanent Collections of the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank of Greece and of the Centenary of Olympic Games and Greek Olympic Champions for the Sports Museum in Thessaloniki. As an art historian and museologist, she has curated more than 40 exhibitions for the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, concerning among others retrospective presentations of Greek artists as well as exhibitions of Joseph Beuys, Max Beckmann, Andy Warhol and Günter Ücker.
