Thesis: Information center for the wrecks of Pagasitikos Gulf. Museological planning and design.

Abstract

This thesis presents the wrecks, identified by the Hellenic Institute of Marine Archaeology [H.I.M.A.] in Pagasitikos Gulf and particularly in the West Coast of the South Pagasitikos. In the extended area, the six research missions carried out by 2007 [during the years 2000 and 2003 to 2007] identified a total of «15» shipwrecks. One of these, Wreck 7, was considered worth investigating more thoroughly. Wreck 7 is located in Tilegrafo Bay, 5 nautical miles south of Amaliapoli, and dates to the late 4th century of the Christian era, i.e. the later Roman period and revealed that seven types of amphorae discovered in its cargo. Two amphorae are very rare, while one amphora hadn’t identified until the discovery of the wreck.

Considering the above findings, the ongoing research in Pagasitikos and generally the issue of underwater archeology is going to be museological planning and design for the purpose of an information center for the wrecks of Pagasitikos Gulf. This information center proposal will be integrated issues such as trade, shipping routes, cargo, ships and the so called floating society [who «exists» on a ship]. Furthermore, more practical aspects of underwater archeology will be mentioned. Specifically, the stages, the characteristics and the way an underwater excavation is carried out compared to land excavation.
