Thesis title: The archaeological site of Sesklo; museological enhancement

The subject matter of this work is the enhancement and the revival of archaeological sites employing the fundamental principles and theoretical and practical methods adopted by New Museology. Additionally, these principles are applied in practice by designing an exhibition of archaeological findings in the archaeological site of Sesklo, Magnisias.

The archaeological site of Sesklo constitutes a significant paradigm of Greek cultural heritage.  The slew of archaeological findings plays a valuable role to the understanding of Neolithic civilization in the Greek area. The significant value of the Sesklo’s archaeological site in cultural, scientific and academic terms is understated due to the current condition of the area which does not highlights its special and unique features. The purpose of this work is to give prominence to the archaeological findings of the archaeological site of Sesklo. At the same time this initiative will benefit and promote the area of Sesklo.

The structure of this paper is divided into in two sections, the theoretical background and the practical application. The first section describes the findings of the literature research and the development of a methodology and basic principles for the enhancement of an archaeological site. The second section is the practical application of the methods and tools described in the theoretical section to the archaeological site of Sesklo, Magnisias. The practical part is subdivided into two parts, the museological design and the architectural design. The latter is the physical realization of the ideas captured under the general museological concept.
