Thesis: Thessaloniki Design Museum

The unique Design Museum of our country is based in Thessaloniki, though its collection remains homeless since its foundation, a fact that triggered the conception of this Diploma Thesis. The vacant building of the old Municipal Slaughterhouse, an industrial edifice of early 20^th c. located at the western part of the city, its “western gate”, was proposed to house the new Museum.The first part of the Thesis analyses the collection and deals with the programming in terms of spaces and the museological approach. Following this programming, the second part deals with the architectural design of the space and the basic ideas for the functional organization and the aesthetic criteria for the whole project. The third part deals with the exhibition itself, proposing a museological and architectural solution to the presentation of the museum’s permanent  collection inside the exhibition gallery itself. This exhibition is seen as an excuse for the understanding  of the industrial object’s evolution and its importance as an integral part of our material culture.
