Nikolaos Kalogirou, Director of the ‘Museology-Cultural Management’ Masters Program

Nikos Kalogirou was born in 1951, in Veria, Greece.  He received his architecture diploma in 1975 from the School of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.  He continued his post-graduate studies in Paris, in the following fields:

  • DEA Spécialité : Populations et groupes sociaux: Histoire, Géographie, Démographie,, EHESS, (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales) 1976
  • Stage de formation supérieure en Urbanisme, CRU (Centre de Recherche d’Urbanisme), Certificat, 1976, Diplôme de Formation Supérieure, 1979
  • DEA Analyse Régionale et Aménagement du Territoire (aménagement régional et urbain), Univ. de Paris 1-Panthéon-Sorbonne, U.E.R. de Géographie, 1977
  • In 1979 he received his PhD from the University of Paris 1-Pantéon-Sorbonne. His dessertation topic was « the investigation of urbanisation in the peripherial settlements of Thessaloniki »

He is a professor of the School of Architecture-Faculty of Engineering of AUTH where he has been teaching since 1983. He has supervised numerous diploma design projects and doctoral theses.  During the period 1991-1993 he was a visiting professor at the Graduate School of the Architectural Association in London. Since 2000 he is a professor and coordinator, and since 2006, director of studies for the graduate program in Environmental Design of Buildings and Cities of the Greek Open University.

He has also contributed considerably academic administration,  as director of the Department of Architectural and Urban Design (2000-2001),  (2013) , as Vice Head  (2001-2005 ) and as Head ( 2005-2009) , (2013) of the School of Architecture of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki , as a founding member of the temporary General Assembly of the new School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete in Chania (2003-2005) , as a founding member – Vice Head (2004-2008) and as Head (2008-2010)  of the department of Spatial Planning and Development of AUTH.

He has published more than 100 articles in scientific journals and in proceedings of Greek and international conferences. In addition, there are more than 100 publications on architectural and urban projects in international and Greek magazines or catalogs.  He has co-written and edited 35 books on architecture and urban design. As an active citizen, he has often presented his views and ideas in newspapers and magazines, on television and radio.

His research and applied work concerns the fields of architectural and urban design, urban planning and the rehabilitation of sites and buildings. He has participated as scientific coordinator, or main researcher, in 30 research projects from various bodies and institutions (European Union, Ministries, Municipalities, and Universities). He is author of numerous private and public projects and realizations which include housing, cultural facilities, university buildings, urban design, town planning and restorations. His applied work has been published and presented in special editions and exhibitions in Greece and abroad and furthermore, has participated in organizing and managing architectural exhibitions of major importance.  His work has received more than 30 awards and distinctions in national and international architectural competitions.
